The students create a drawing to explain why increasing the length and width of a room increases the area so much more than they predicted in Episode 4.

Episode Supports

Students’ Conceptual Challenges

Mauricio and Emily briefly discussed how to draw Jazmine’s office so that it also shows Imani’s office. While they didn’t seem to be particularly challenged by this part of the task, you may want to watch for students who do struggle with this. This part of the task might call for careful monitoring of student work so you can highlight productive approaches. It will be important for students to have a productive image for reasoning about binomial multiplication in later episodes (an example of this kind of image is seen at the end of this episode [11:33]).

Focus Questions

For use in a classroom, pause the video and ask this question:

[Pause the video at 3:31] Before watching Emily and Mauricio make their drawing, you should try to create a drawing for yourself. Make a drawing that shows Jazmine’s office. Be sure you can see Imani’s office in the drawing as well as the difference in area between the two offices. Then watch the video to compare your work with the drawing that Mauricio and Emily create.[Pause the video at 3:31] Before watching Emily and Mauricio make their drawing, you should try to create a drawing for yourself. Supporting Dialogue

[Pause the video at 9:27] With a partner, examine the drawing that Emily and Mauricio have created. Where do each of you see the 9 ft2 that the pair predicted as the difference in the areas of the two offices?
