The students are asked to arrange eight angles in order from most open to least open. After they have determined an initial ordering, they check their work by tracing the angles onto patty paper and comparing them directly by overlaying one on top of the other.

Students’ Conceptual Challenges
In this video, Claire and Mary work to order several angles from most open to least open. As they discuss each angle and reason through this task, it seems that they do not perceive the reflex angles (angles that are greater than 180 degrees). For the purposes of this task and this lesson, this is not problematic, but you might pose some questions to your students to check in to see if they think angles can be greater than 180 degrees, and if so, where they might see those in the task.
Focus Questions
For use in a classroom, pause the video and ask these questions:
Pause the video at 0:36] How would you order the angles (from most open to least open) that you see on the paper? How might you check your work? Compare your ordering to the ordering made by Mary and Claire.
[Pause the video at 4:57] How would you describe the method Claire and Mary are using to compare angles? What are they comparing when they lay one piece of patty paper over top of another? Why does that work?
Supporting Dialogue
[Pause the video at 2:25] Turn and talk with a partner to tell them if you agree with the ordering made by Mary and Claire or not.
