Focus Questions

For use in a classroom, pause the video and ask this question:

[Pause the video at 1:13]. Predict the relationships that Arobindo and Josh might describe and how they might show those relationships on their timeline.

Supporting Dialogue

As students work on their own timelines, encourage them to discuss the relationships they notice. This would be a good point in this unit to check for any lingering additive thinking for relationships between the heights of the beanstalk at different days. You may introduce a fictional student, Brielle, who says that since the beanstalk grew 2 cm from Day 0 to Day 1, then it should grow another 2 cm from Day 1 to Day 2; so its height would be 5 cm on Day 1. Ask them to analyze that thinking and discuss what is problematic about it in this context.
