Focus Questions

For use in a classroom, pause the video and ask this question:

[Pause the video at 1:14] Explain the relationship between 31/3 and the cube root of 3. How does this relate to the beanstalk’s growth over time? What does it mean for one number to be the cube root of another number? Can you see in the timeline drawn by Josh and Arobindo? What about 31/3?

Supporting Dialogue

Consider pausing the video at [1:39] and asking students to work with a partner to find a decimal approximation for the cube root. Have them describe their process. Then watch Arobindo and Josh find the approximation. Encourage your students to look for similarities and differences between their method and Arobindo and Josh’s method.
