Focus Questions

For use in a classroom, pause the video and ask this question:

[Pause the video at 0:34 and/or 4:20] Ask students to use ET and Haleemah’s method from the previous video (Episode 1) to find the total amount spent by the friends if the apps now cost $3 and/or $2.50 each.

Supporting Dialogue

  1. Prompt students to consider ET and Haleemah’s method and ask them if there is anything they would like to say to Haleemah and ET. Do they have questions about their method or any suggestions for improving it?
  2. In preparation for the next lesson, in which Haleemah and ET will generalize their method, ask students to describe to their partner in words ET and Haleemah’s method. Ask them to point out to one another what changes—and what stays the same—each time they find the total amount spent on apps by the three friends.
