The students explore the path a fly takes as it travels along the tip of a fan blade at 8 stops. They think about the fly’s height above the middle of the fan and how that changes with the angle of rotation.

Students’ Conceptual Challenges

Mary seems unsure about what she and Claire are measuring. She expresses some confusion about why the height of the fly at the 1/8 mark wouldn’t be half the height of the fly at the 2/8 mark [4:20]. She eventually realizes Claire is discussing the height from the midline, and not some other quantity.

Focus Questions

For use in a classroom, pause the video and ask these questions:

  1. [Pause the video at 0:20] Try this task for yourself. Show how a fly’s height above the midline of the circle is changing as the blade of the fan rotates.
  2. [Pause the video at 7:43] What do you think Claire meant when she said you use the same heights if you’re only concerned with the stops indicated on the diagram?

Supporting Dialogue

[Pause the video at 3:40] Restate in your own words Claire’s ideas about where most of the height is being gained as the fly moves from the 3 o’clock position to the 12 o’clock position. Compare your ideas with a partner’s.
