Focus Questions

For use in a classroom, pause the video and ask these questions:

  1. [Pause the video at 4:44] Emily and Mauricio have written three equations: 5 × 4 = 20; 3 × 4 = 12; and 20 + 12 = 32 ft2. For each equation, point out each number as you see it in their drawing. For example, where do you see the 5, the 4, and the 20 in the drawing? You should also be sure to add appropriate units for each number, for example by stating what unit is appropriate for the 5 in the equation 5 × 4 = 20.
  2. [Pause the video 6:30] At 5:58 the teacher asks how the pair were thinking about their prediction of 32 ft2. Mauricio says he was thinking about adding five and three, and then doing 8 × 4. Can you clarify what he means in your own words? What do you think Mauricio was thinking about? Can you link your ideas to their drawing?

Supporting Dialogue

[Pause the video at 3:19] Talk with a partner about how the drawing Mauricio and Emily have just made represents the context of Jamal’s gardens.
