At\u00a0<strong>1:52<\/strong>\u00a0she says \u201cx is all of this, everything around.\u201d At\u00a0<strong>4:00<\/strong>\u00a0she says that every side would be x, as she circles each side of the pool. This is a common challenge for students\u2014identifying with specificity the quantity for which a variable is being used.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>When asked where the x \u2013 2 is, Haleemah correctly describes a\u00a0<em>process<\/em>\u00a0of finding x (the number of tiles in one of the sides) and then removing the two corners. Another important interpretation of x \u2013 2 is as the number of tiles left (after taking away the two corner tiles). Haleemah struggles to see x \u2013 2 as the number of tiles between two corners\u00a0<strong>[6:49]<\/strong>.
